How often do you find yourself looking in the mirror only to discover a new wrinkle, or crease that wasn't there last week! AAHHH!!! You feel like age is setting in and you can no longer deny how old you actually are. You never thought the day would come that you would have to worry about anti-wrinkle cream or eye serum, these are things only your mom and grandma speak of. If only there was something you could do that could help fade wrinkles, remove dark circles and make your skin glow like it used to. Something that doesn't cost absurd amounts of money, cause endless amounts of pain or only give you temporary results. Well I am here to tell you there is! And I have the solution, facial rejuvenation acupuncture (aka cosmetic acupuncture).

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is based on the principles of Chinese Medicine, which involves the insertion of very thin sterile, disposable needles into the acupuncture points on the face.  It has been used in China with success for over 2000 years.  The superficial insertion of needles into the facial acupuncture points with increase local circulation to the face and stimulate collagen production leading to filled out wrinkle lines and give firmness to the skin for a healthy, glowing complexion.  It can help lessen the appearance of dark circles around the eyes and minimize the appearance of pores.

Cosmetic acupuncture has attracted great attention in the last few years, especially in the big cities like New York City and Los Angles.  It used to be treatment only for the rich and famous in Hollywood, but now everyone wants the royal treatment.

Effects and Benefits

Cosmetic Acupuncture may take 5-10 years off your face. It helps to eliminate fine lines and makes the deeper lines look softer. It can also help to minimize dark circles, puffy eyes, double chin, sagging skin, and dropping eyelids.

Other benefits include:

•  Relaxes muscle tone

•   Increases circulation, therefore oxygenates the skin

•  Increases collagen production

•  Tightens the pores, and brightens the eyes

•  Keeps acne skin under control

•  Nourishes the skin, giving you a healthy complexion with a natural glow

•  Moisturizes the skin from inside, and gives rosy cheeks to people with dull, tired looking skin

Who would benefit from this procedure?

Anyone who wants to delay the process of aging and wants to look and feel younger.

Course of Treatment

The course of the treatment is between 10-12 sessions. This will be done 1-3 times a week for best results. Each individual will respond different to the treatment depending on their age and lifestyle. Visible results may be noticeable
after 6 -7 sessions. Maintenance maybe needed once every month.

My patients that have tried facial rejuvenation acupuncture love it! They come back for visits telling me that people at work have asked what they have been doing to their skin because it looks so great. The even greater news is if you have naturopathic benefits through a third party insurance you will even have coverage to use towards your treatment! Sessions are 1 hour in length and once you sign up for the 10 sessions the cost is only $110 per visit.

Fat Free, Sugar Free = Obesity

One of the most important lessons to teach anyone trying to lose weight is to avoid any foods labelled 'sugar free' or 'fat free.' These are key words that simply mean these foods are full of lots of chemicals, most of which you probably can't even pronounce. The misconception that fat free foods are actually better for you and will help you lose weight has spurred a billion dollar industry. It is a genius marketing plan for stores to sell an abundance of unhealthy 'healthy' food.

When the fat is removed from foods they need to add things to the food to make it taste better (since fat is what normally makes foods taste good and make you feel satisfied). Usually sugar and other chemicals are then added. This is why it is important to read the full labels on foods.  In addition to calories, you should also look at the fat content, protein, carbohydrate and sugar content. Also read the ingredient list. My rule of thumb with patients is always, if you can't read it, don't eat it!  I actually encourage my patients to eat foods with the full fat content and utilize portion control. I tell them to add healthy fats to their diets. These include omega 3 fats found in foods such as avocados, nuts and seeds, coconut oil and salmon.  This will ensure that they are getting the fats that they need to support nerve cell health, boost metabolism and produce hormones, to say the least.  These fats also make us feel satisfied so we don't feel the need to keep eating or crave unhealthy foods.

When foods are labelled sugar free, this means that sugar has been replaced with some sort of a substitute and usually and unfortunately, this is aspartame. Brand names of aspartame that you may be more familiar with are NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure.  Aspartame has been labelled one of the most dangerous substances that has been added to food. It not only is broken down into formaldehyde in the body (the process is complicated, but well studied, to read more about it check out this link ), but it also confuses our body and actually causes weight gain.  This is not good since most people attracted to sugar free products are diabetics and those with obesity issues.  When you consume an artificial sweetener the body does not know how to metabolize it and gets very confused. Normally when we eat something sweet our body releases the neurotransmitter dopamine. This is a neurotransmitter that makes us feel good by activating our reward center in the brain.  Once the sugar is consumed and calories come in, another hormone called leptin is also released and this is a signal that tells our body when we are full and satisfied. The problem is when we consume artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, the release of dopamine occurs but then the calories (sugar) don't actually come so the reward center is never turned off and your body continues to signal that it needs more sugar. This then leads to more carbohydrate cravings in order to reach a point of satisfaction and satiety.  This is a very dangerous game to play with our bodies and often can lead to insulin resistance and eventually diabetes.

In conclusion, beware of sugar free, fat free or zero calorie drinks and foods such as yogurts, diet pop, Crystal light, sugar free gum, sour cream and juices just to name a few.  The more chemicals the food contains the more likely you are to store it as fat. Our body is not wired to process chemicals synthesized in a lab and if it can't recognize what it is or what to do with it, it will take the easy way out and just store it as fat.  Once I help patients recognize what they are eating and how to read labels and cut out the offending foods, we almost always begin to get the weight loss results they have been trying so hard to achieve.

    Dr. Claudia Truglia

I am a naturopathic doctor with a passion to help motivate and encourage people to feel healthy. My favourite part of my job, aside from watching people become healthier and happier before my eyes, is educating my patients. I love being able to spend enough time with patients that I can teach them how amazing the human body is and every part of our body ties into the next. It is so fascinating how our bodies have the ability to heal themselves and I love to watch people stare at me in awe as I start to make all of their health concerns make sense to them. It is the most rewarding feeling in the world to watch someone who is suffering so much come back and feel incredible after years and years of hopelessness. I love my job! It truly is my passion and my calling.
